Context
The heat bears down on Landgraaf on June 9, 2014. In front of the 3FM Stage, the field is packed for Stromae. Racine carrée had already widened his reach in Europe, and Ta fête had been adopted by the Belgian national team as its song for the World Cup in Brazil.
In knee-high socks, the singer acknowledges the weight of the temperature and thanks the crowd for helping him stay on his feet. He switches between English and Dutch when he speaks. On Papaoutai, three musicians carry him to the microphone: the song about an absent father takes on a body moved by other hands.
The Pinkpop stop is part of a tour that runs until 2015 and crosses Europe, the Americas and Africa. Excerpts of the performance make it into the Dutch television coverage of the festival. The film Racine carrée Live was made later, in Montreal, not in Landgraaf. What remains here is the meeting between the scale of the festival and a character also built through gesture.
