“To see Tom Zé bring together four decades of creative work in his first live retrospective, directed by Charles Gavin.”
Context
In August 2009, four decades of songs fit onto the stage of Teatro da FECAP in São Paulo. Charles Gavin had proposed a retrospective to Tom Zé and picked out fifty songs. Together, they narrow the selection to twenty-four, chosen as much for their power onstage as for their place in the discography.
Tom Zé opens with Nave Maria and moves through political satire, work, and desire. Companheiro Bush and Classe Operária share space with Menina Jesus and Minha Carta. Between songs, he recounts episodes from his life and Brazilian history. The band brings together guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, viola, and mandolin, along with vocals.
The performances are released on CD and DVD by Biscoito Fino. In April 2010, Tom Zé brings an abridged version of the project to Sesc Pompeia for the release; later, the recording airs on Canal Brasil. The retrospective preserves a career that cannot be contained in his earliest songs or his international rediscovery alone.
- O Céu Desabou and Síncope Joãobim come together in a medley.
