“To see Metal Church with Mike Howe at Bloodstock, during the Damned If You Do tour.”
Context
On August 9, 2019, Metal Church arrives on the grounds of Catton Park with Mike Howe once again fronting the band. The singer's return has already yielded XI and Damned If You Do. At Bloodstock, the quintet takes the Ronnie James Dio stage on the festival's Friday.
Kurdt Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt share guitar duties, with Steve Unger on bass and Stet Howland on drums. Needle and Suture represents the recent material, while Badlands and Fake Healer revisit Blessing in Disguise. The riffs retain their weight, but Howe's voice struggles in places: there is effort, not an unqualified victory.
The recording arrives online in January 2020 and preserves six of the eight songs performed. Damned If You Do and By the Numbers are left out of the available edit, removing the very two tracks from the album that gives the tour its name. This selection centers the memory of the performance on the meeting points between different eras of the band.
