“To see Gaga debut her new backing band at Glastonbury, during her first solo tour.”
Context
At eight in the evening on June 26, 2009, the Other Stage hosts a change in the scale of The Fame Ball. Lady Gaga reaches Glastonbury with a new backing band, introduced to the public there for the first time. Until then, the tour had played stages with a DJ and dancers.
Gaga emerges from a silver box to sing Paparazzi and ends the opening section with a keytar on a rotating platform. Costume changes divide the performance, while the band fills the gaps. Boys Boys Boys gets a spiked red outfit; at the close, Poker Face passes through the piano before returning with full accompaniment.
After the festival, The Fame Ball runs until September 2009, still tied to the debut album. The Glastonbury recording stays on the TV circuit: in February 2010, BBC Three airs 55 minutes of the performance. The footage preserves a concrete passage from a DJ-based show to a new band structure.
- Poker Face closes the performance twice, first on piano and then with full accompaniment.
