Circle of Live — Passengers — Aérodrome Melun-Villaroche
Recorded June 27, 2019
Aérodrome de Melun-Villaroche · Montereau-sur-le-Jard ·
France
“To see Mullaert, Vril and Neel improvise together among vintage airplanes, in a one-off Passengers session.”
Context
On June 27, 2019, the heat bears down on the outskirts of Paris. Inside a hangar at the Melun-Villaroche airfield, vintage airplanes share space with electronic machines. Passengers brings Circle of Live there, a project led by Sebastian Mullaert that swaps a fixed lineup for a meeting of musicians.
Mullaert, Vril and Neel go into the session with no set musical plan. The idea is to build an hour of improvisation, recorded in a single take and streamed online. Seven camera operators spread out among the aircraft. Before it starts, the temperature already takes its toll: Vril's 909 breaks down.
The gathering does not end with the ARTE broadcast. On July 25, the session gets a digital release on the Circle of Live label itself, as its third release. The audio is mastered and reaches the platforms. The improvisation made among airplanes also circulates beyond the image, preserved as one continuous piece.
- A single take captures about an hour of collective creation with no prior musical script.
