Context
In August 2022, Cologne Cathedral celebrates seven centuries since the consecration of its choir with a proposal far from the conventional sacred concert. Grandbrothers opens the jubilee's music program. The invitation demands more than bringing over a set: Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel also compose for the building's particular acoustics.
On stage, Sarp plays the grand piano while Vogel controls electromechanical devices and transforms their sounds digitally. The instrument supplies both notes and raw material for electronic pulses and textures. The lighting follows the Gothic architecture, and the 360-degree sound brings the space into the performance. Daybreak opens the journey; All The Unknown closes it.
The experience does not end that night. The sessions held in the cathedral feed into Late Reflections, the duo's fourth album, released in April 2023. Before that, in February, the concert reaches television on ARTE. The film preserves the meeting between a reinvented instrument and a building whose reverberation is part of the musical concept itself.
- Pieces created for the cathedral's acoustics meet architectural lighting and 360-degree sound.
