“To see Antonini bring the Requiem to the Sagrada Família in front of an exclusively young audience, in February 2025.”
Context
On February 17, 2025, the Sagrada Família welcomes an audience aged 18 to 35 for a mass for the dead. The age limit refers to Mozart's age, 35, when he died. The partnership between the Liceu and the basilica takes the Requiem out of the theater and places it under Gaudí's architecture.
Giovanni Antonini conducts the orchestra and choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, with Emőke Baráth, Marina Viotti, Levy Sekgapane and Nicola Ulivieri as soloists. The performance covers the complete Requiem in D minor: from the Introitus to the Communio, the voices fill the nave among columns, arches and stained glass.
The next day, the Requiem takes another form at the Liceu, in Romeo Castellucci's staging, which incorporates other sacred works by Mozart. Here, the concert version remains. With video direction by Guillaume Klein, the film reaches ARTE's programming and preserves the meeting of the score with the space of the basilica.
