“To see the Cairo Opera close, in Paris, the tribute marking fifty years since Oum Kalthoum's death.”
Context
On the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of Oum Kalthoum's death, Paris hosts a tribute that comes from Cairo. It is February 2, 2025. In the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez, Kulthumiyat closes a run of four performances dedicated to the singer, with the Cairo Opera Arabic Music Orchestra.
Alaa Abdelsalam leads the ensemble, joined by a choir and by soloists Rehab Omar and Eman Abdel-Ghani. Four songs carry the program: Alf Leila w Leila, Hazihi Laylati, Al-atlâl and Enta omri. The compositions by Baligh Hamdi, Riad al Sunbati and Mohamed Abdelwahab return the voice to the center of the stage.
The gathering lives on through the ARTE broadcast and the Philharmonie's audiovisual archive. The tribute goes beyond the anniversary: it places performers tied to the Cairo Opera before a repertoire that spans generations. The recording preserves this meeting between the memory of a singer and the voices that keep her present.
