“To see Ermonela Jaho's Aix debut, in the tribute to the centenary of Puccini's death.”
Context
In July 2024, the centenary of Puccini's death brings Madama Butterfly to the Théâtre de l’Archevêché. The festival had added the composer to its repertoire with Tosca in 2019. Now Andrea Breth takes on the staging, while Ermonela Jaho makes her Aix debut as the young woman abandoned by Pinkerton.
Daniele Rustioni leads the chorus and orchestra of the Opéra de Lyon. At the center of the action, Jaho shares the tragedy with Adam Smith's Pinkerton, Mihoko Fujimura's Suzuki and Lionel Lhote's Sharpless. The wait for her husband stretches over three years and ends with the loss of her son and Cio-Cio-San's suicide.
The run continues until July 22, but the performance on the 13th gets another destination: the ARTE broadcast. Philippe Béziat directs for the screen, in coproduction with Camera Lucida. The recording preserves the meeting of Rustioni and Jaho in a production that turns the tribute to the composer into a drama of abandonment.
