Eumir Deodato — Ao Vivo no Rio
Recorded 2007
Sala Cecília Meireles · Rio de Janeiro ·
Brazil
“To see Deodato record in Rio in 2007, with a trio and a tribute to Jobim's 80th birthday.”
Context
Forty years after settling in the United States, Eumir Deodato returns to record his music in Rio de Janeiro. On April 3 and 4, 2007, Sala Cecília Meireles welcomes the arranger in a trio setting. The occasion also celebrates Tom Jobim, who would have turned 80 that year.
Deodato takes the keyboards, Marcelo Mariano plays bass and Renato Massa Calmon is on drums. The repertoire brings the groove of Whistle Bump and Skyscrapers together with the melodies of Dindi, Wave, Sabiá and Samba de uma Nota Só. The tribute revisits a professional partnership with Jobim that spanned nearly fifteen years.
The recording is released on CD and DVD by Biscoito Fino later in 2007. Filmed in HDV, the performance captures the meeting of the jazz-funk composer and the arranger shaped by Brazilian music. It also revisits Also Sprach Zarathustra, the Strauss adaptation that brought him international recognition in 1973.
