Album featured at the showAlma Lírica Brasileira2011The recording revisits and expands the repertoire of the album conceived as a trio with Nelson Ayres and Teco Cardoso.“To see the trio reunited after ending its run of shows, in a performance filmed without an audience and directed by Walter Carvalho.”
Context
The audience stays outside, giving the cameras room at Teatro Alfa. In January 2012, Mônica Salmaso reunites Nelson Ayres and Teco Cardoso after the trio’s run of shows has ended. An invitation from Biscoito Fino and Canal Brasil turns the show into material for cinema.
Ayres takes the grand piano; Cardoso alternates between flutes and saxophones; Mônica sings and plays percussion. Melodia Sentimental opens a journey that brings Villa-Lobos together with the moda de viola of Promessa de Violeiro and the sambas of Adoniran Barbosa. Surrounded by pieces by Brazilian artisans, the three perform eighteen songs before Walter Carvalho’s cameras.
The gathering extends the 2011 album and is released on DVD and Blu-ray. In 2013, the film wins the Prêmio da Música Brasileira for best DVD. The absence of an audience is no mere production detail: it allows the filming to center on the relationship between the singer, the pianist and the wind player.
- Voice, piano and winds move through eighteen songs, from Melodia Sentimental to Trem das Onze.
