Context
In February 2024, the NPR office welcomes a figure in white makeup and a towering wig, surrounded by a band dressed in pink. Chappell Roan arrives in Washington about five months after her album debut. The drag-inspired persona meets a small stage without giving up its visual scale.
Casual opens the sequence of five songs from The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Pink Pony Club puts queer liberation at the center; Picture You and Red Wine Supernova explore desire, while California lays bare displacement. Guitar, bass, drums and keyboards share space with violin, cello and backing vocals.
In March, the session reaches the public through the Tiny Desk series. The album is still on its way into the Billboard 200, which happens in April, before reaching number two that year. At the office, a concrete souvenir stays behind: the wig comes to rest on the skull left by Cypress Hill on the shelves.
- Violin and cello are part of the lineup backing the five songs from the debut album.
