Gal Costa was the voice that gave Tropicália its body and then reinvented herself every decade. From the Bahia that listened to João Gilberto to the psychedelic scream of “Divino, Maravilhoso” and the Fa-Tal show, she turned clear, limpid singing into an act of freedom in the middle of the dictatorship.
From Índia to Gal Tropical and Fantasia, she became a major interpreter of Caetano, Gil, Jorge Ben and Tom Jobim. She died in 2022, after a final phase in which she returned to working with young songwriters.
