Caetano Veloso left Santo Amaro, in the Recôncavo Baiano, to change what Brazilian song understands about itself. With Gilberto Gil, he led Tropicália, which brought electric guitar, concrete poetry, bossa nova and kitsch together in a single critical gesture.
Jailed and exiled by the dictatorship, he came back to build a restless body of work, from Transa and Araçá Azul to Cê and Meu Coco, always between a songwriter’s refinement and a public intellectual’s provocation.
