The The emerged in 1979 as Matt Johnson’s project in London and went through shifting lineups, with Johnson as the constant member. After the solo album Burning Blue Soul, it released Soul Mining (1983), which includes “This Is the Day”, and Infected (1986).

Mind Bomb (1989) and Dusk (1993) kept the project active in the following years. After a long gap without a studio album, it returned in 2024 with Ensoulment.
