The Cult emerged in Bradford, England, out of Southern Death Cult, the group Ian Astbury formed in 1981. With Billy Duffy, Astbury went through Death Cult before settling on the final name.
The 1985 album Love marked the shift from post-punk to hard rock structures, while Electric and Sonic Temple widened the band’s reach. After a break in the 1990s, Astbury and Duffy revived the group, which keeps releasing albums and touring.
