Shakespears Sister was born when Siobhan Fahey left Bananarama’s bright machine and found, in Marcella Detroit, a shadow able to sing back. Between gothic pop, cabaret theater and radio melodrama, it turned resentment, desire and irony into songs that seemed to smile through smeared lipstick.
“Stay” became its great public ghost, but the story is bigger: an incendiary duo, a bitter split and a cult that kept breathing in the rubble.
Pop here bleeds like cheap melodrama and, precisely because of that, feels true.
