Roupa Nova formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1980, when musicians who were already playing together adopted the name suggested by producer Mariozinho Rocha. Their first album came out in 1981, and their 1983 record brought Anjo to radio and the telenovela Guerra dos Sexos.
In 1985, the band released another self-titled album, with songs such as Dona and Whisky a Go-Go, which also found a place on telenovela soundtracks. The group remained active after vocalist Paulinho's death in 2020.
