Robert Wyatt was born in Bristol, England, in 1945, and was drummer and singer of Soft Machine, a group tied to the Canterbury scene that he helped found in 1966. After leaving the band, he led Matching Mole and started a solo career.
In 1973, a fall left him paraplegic; the following year, he released Rock Bottom, recorded during his recovery. He kept making albums and collaborations, among them Old Rottenhat and Shleep.
