A saxophonist, composer and researcher, Raphaël Imbert is one of the French musicians who has thought most deeply about jazz as a spiritual experience. Self-taught until he joined the jazz class at the Marseille conservatory, he founded the Compagnie Nine Spirit in 1999, devoted to the sacred music of Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler.
Author of the book Jazz Supreme, he brings together jazz, Bach, traditional music and improvisation, in partnerships with musicians such as Archie Shepp and Jean-Guihen Queyras.
