Quarteto Bessler made its debut in 1976 at Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio de Janeiro and performed on tours and at festivals in Brazil and abroad. The group recorded Brazilian and European chamber music; for part of its career, following the arrival of cellist Alceu Reis, it used the name Quarteto Bessler-Reis. Its recordings include Villa-Lobos's string quartets, released internationally by the French label Le Chant du Monde.
