Marisa Monte is the most successful synthesis of tradition and pop in Brazilian music since the late 1980s. Born in Rio and trained in operatic singing, she debuted with MM in 1989 and went on to alternate sambas from Portela’s old guard, her own songs and reinterpretations, with careful production and crystal-clear pitch.
Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor-de-Rosa e Carvão, Memórias, Crônicas e Declarações de Amor and Tribalistas, with Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown, established an artist of enormous reach and rare standards.
