Lila Downs sings like someone carrying a village, a border and a courtroom inside her throat. A daughter of Oaxaca and the United States, she turned Indigenous languages, ranchera, cumbia, jazz and protest into full-bodied music.
Her work does not turn tradition into folklore: it calls the dead, the migrants and the women to the table. Between La Sandunga, Una Sangre and Pecados y Milagros, she made identity both a celebration and an accusation.
Her voice does not represent a culture: it stands it up, with flowers, knife and drum.
