Born in Rio de Janeiro, Leonardo Miranda studied piano as a child and began learning flute in 1989. Trained as a physician, he became a flutist and researcher of choro's historical repertoire, with a focus on the work of Joaquim Callado.
In 2000, he released his first album, Leonardo Miranda Toca Joaquim Calado, on Acari Records. He also took part in recordings for the Princípios do Choro series and albums dedicated to the genre's composers and repertoire.
