Born in Leicester, Jon Lord began his career in the Artwoods and joined Deep Purple in 1968. His organ shaped records like Deep Purple in Rock and Machine Head, which includes “Smoke on the Water”, co-written by him.
Between stints with the group, he played with Whitesnake and released solo work that brought rock and classical music together, such as Gemini Suite and Sarabande. He left Deep Purple in 2002 and died in 2012.
