Jamelão was born in São Cristóvão, in Rio de Janeiro, and began his journey at Mangueira playing tamborim. He also worked as a crooner in samba dance halls and sang on the radio and in nightclubs before recording albums.
In 1972, he released Jamelão Interpreta Lupicínio Rodrigues, dedicated to the composer's repertoire. For decades, he was the official singer of Mangueira's sambas-enredo, a role that tied him to the samba school until his death in 2008.
