Born in Rio de Janeiro, Guinga began composing at 16 and had a song selected for the Festival Internacional da Canção in 1967. The first recordings of his compositions appeared on MPB-4 albums in 1973.
He worked as an acoustic guitarist with artists such as Cartola and Clara Nunes and practiced dentistry alongside music for decades. In 1996, he released his first solo album, Simples e Absurdo; his albums and collaborations with Aldir Blanc brought his compositions to a wider audience.
