Garou was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and rose to prominence as Quasimodo in the original production of the musical Notre-Dame de Paris in 1997. The song “Belle”, recorded with Daniel Lavoie and Patrick Fiori, widened his French-speaking reach.
In 2000, he released Seul, his first solo album, which featured “Sous le vent”, a duet with Céline Dion. He kept releasing records, among them Gentleman cambrioleur and Soul City, and returned to performing in Quebec.
