Darryl McDaniels was born in Harlem, New York, and formed Run-D.M.C. in 1982 with Joseph Simmons and Jason Mizell. As D.M.C., he played on albums that helped bring rap to a broad audience, among them Raising Hell, from 1986, which includes the version of Walk This Way with Aerosmith.
After the group’s run, he released his first solo album, Checks Thugs and Rock N Roll, in 2006, and went on working in music, comics and adoption-support projects.
