Cult of Luna emerged in Umeå, Sweden, in 1998, after the end of the hardcore band Eclipse. The group released its first album in 2001 and developed a sound that brings together sludge metal, post-rock and progressive passages.
Albums such as Salvation and Somewhere Along the Highway cemented that direction. After a break that began in 2013, it returned with Mariner, a collaboration with Julie Christmas, and released A Dawn to Fear in 2019.
