Chico César came from Catolé do Rocha, in the backlands of Paraíba, and reached all of Brazil with “Mama África” and “À Primeira Vista”. Since Aos Vivos, from 1995, he has built a body of work that brings together forró, reggae, African music and protest song, with sharp-humored lyrics and racial consciousness.
A poet and former journalist, he also served as Paraíba’s secretary of culture without leaving the stage, where he still moves between celebration and speech.
