Elizabeth Santos Leal de Carvalho was born in Rio de Janeiro and began recording in 1965. After performing Andança in competition at the Festival Internacional da Canção, she turned to samba with Canto por um novo dia and Pra seu governo.
De Pé no Chão, released in 1978, featured compositions associated with the samba circles at Cacique de Ramos and helped launch artists such as Zeca Pagodinho and the group Fundo de Quintal. Her career continued until her death in 2019.
