At The Gates helped codify the Gothenburg sound: melodic death metal like a clean blade, philosophical despair and almost punk precision. Slaughter of the Soul became both blueprint and curse, ending the band's first life at the height of its influence. The return brought a dark maturity; after Tomas Lindberg's death, each final track sounds like a testament of cold fire.
