Sandra de Sá was born and raised in the Pilares neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. She gained recognition in the late 1970s when her composition Demônio Colorido reached the finals of an MPB festival. She released her first album in 1980 and scored hits with songs such as Olhos Coloridos and Joga Fora.
In the years that followed, she developed a career bringing together soul, funk and Brazilian popular music, with albums such as África Natividade and tributes to Tim Maia.
