Roberto Menescal was born in Vitória and grew up in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. He began his professional career in 1957, accompanying Sylvinha Telles, and the following year formed his own ensemble and opened an acoustic guitar school with Carlos Lyra.
With Ronaldo Bôscoli, he wrote O barquinho and other songs central to bossa nova. In the 1970s, he served as artistic director at PolyGram. He continued as a composer, acoustic guitarist and producer, collaborating with artists of different generations, including Leila Pinheiro and Wanda Sá.
