A songwriter, guitarist and researcher from Santo Amaro da Purificação, Roberto Mendes never left the Recôncavo Baiano and made it the center of his work. A guardian of samba de chula, which he defines as the samba before samba, he brings the grooves of the region’s traditional rodas into song.
His music reached the whole country in the voices of Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso, most notably “Massemba”, written with Capinam.
