Formed in Halifax, in the north of England, in 1988, Paradise Lost helped invent gothic metal by slowing death metal down and filling it with melancholy. Gothic and Draconian Times combined weight, melody and desolation, influencing an entire generation of bands.
In the late 1990s, it flirted with electronics on One Second and Host, before returning to its doom roots on The Plague Within and Obsidian, with Nick Holmes and Gregor Mackintosh at the center of one of the most coherent careers in British metal.
