Orlando Silva was born in the Rio suburb of Engenho de Dentro in 1915. He sang at parties and on radio before making his recording debut in 1935, and soon became one of the leading singers of the radio era.
His recording of Carinhoso, by Pixinguinha and João de Barro, marked his career, as did the samba-canções and waltzes he recorded for Victor. He went through periods away from music and returned to performing and recording at different stages. He died in Rio in 1978.
