Born in Cataguases, Maria Alcina began performing in churches, at parties and in amusement parks. She arrived in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s and gained prominence by winning the 1972 Festival Internacional da Canção with Jorge Ben's Fio Maravilha.
In 1973, she released her first record, and the following year she recorded Kid Cavaquinho by João Bosco and Aldir Blanc. Censorship and television shaped phases of her career; in the 1980s, she recorded Prenda o Tadeu. She died in 2026.
