Born in Carmo, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state, Egberto Gismonti studied piano and composition before recording his first LP in 1969. In the following years, he released Água e Vinho and Academia de Danças, and expanded his international profile with Dança das Cabeças, recorded as a duo with Naná Vasconcelos.
He founded the Carmo label and worked with artists such as Charlie Haden and Jan Garbarek. His output includes compositions for piano, acoustic guitar and instrumental ensembles.
