Criolo was born in Grajaú, on São Paulo's south side, and spent years in the hip-hop scene before releasing Ainda Há Tempo in 2006 as Criolo Doido. National recognition came with 2011's Nó na Orelha, which brought rap into dialogue with samba, reggae and other genres. On 2014's Convoque Seu Buda, he maintained that openness; he later released Espiral de Ilusão, devoted to samba, and Sobre Viver in 2022.
