Aracy de Almeida was born in the Encantado neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro in 1914. She began singing in choirs and made her way onto radio after Custódio Mesquita heard her. She became one of the singers most closely associated with the songs of Noel Rosa, which she recorded from the 1930s onward.
In the 1950s, she moved to São Paulo, where she lived for twelve years; she later returned to Rio and also became known to television audiences. She died in 1988.
